It was a warm, summer-like afternoon at Magnolia Science Academy in Reseda as House of Champions Founder, Shihan Mark Parra padded barefoot across the grassy field towards a collection of nearly 300 elementary students. Apparently, someone had told the students there might be a demo of some “wicked cool” board breaking so they greeted Sensei Mark eagerly with a roudy applause.
With the help of students Billy and Nicolas (who are also Arjukenpo Karate students at HOC), Sensei Mark demonstrated and led the kids through a series of self defense moves and positions intended to give them more self confidence and empowerment should they find themselves in a tricky situation out on the street or even at school. They also had an interactive discussion about attitude, awareness and being practical…”Your moves dont have to be fancy”, Sensei Mark reminded the students, “they just need to be effective!”. The “Bully Defense & Stranger Danger” Seminar also included student participation in board breaking whereby select kids were brought up and instructed to think of their biggest challenge or the biggest lie they tell themselves, such as, “I’ll never be good at math”, or “I can’t play basketball so why even try!”. The kids were excited but a bit doubtful in their ability to actually break a board. But Sensei Mark continued on. “Now, pin that negative message to your board and let’s break it…break apart that challenge, that lie and let today be the day you decide to make a change in your life in that area!” Sensei Mark encouraged them. There were cheers and grins all around as every participant successfully kicked, chopped and even head bashed their wooden boards in half!
The hour wrapped with Sensei Mark treating the kids to a series of beautifully executed kata which certainly demonstrated his many years of hard work and practice has paid off. The students were also each given a parting gift of a one month gift certicate to train for free at the House of Champions so they could go experience a variety of martial arts classes to see what they would most enjoy. Special Thanks goes out to Billy’s mom Brandee for inviting HOC to come out to Magnolia Science Academy!
